Many women spend months, and sometimes years, treating recurring BV without ever being told why it keeps coming back.
The symptoms improve for a while. Then they return. Another appointment leads to another prescription, another temporary improvement, and eventually another recurrence.
For some women, the cycle becomes so familiar that they begin to believe recurring BV is simply something they have to live with.
It isn’t.
And that is where the conversation needs to change.
The Cycle Far Too Many Women Know
Most women can tell you exactly how the cycle begins.
A change in odor. A change in discharge. A feeling that something is not quite right.
They schedule an appointment, receive treatment, and feel relieved when the symptoms begin to improve. For a brief period, it seems like the problem has finally been solved.
Then the symptoms return.
The process starts all over again.
For some women, recurrence happens within weeks. For others, it may take months. Regardless of timing, the result is often the same: frustration, confusion, and the growing belief that no one is providing real answers.
The physical symptoms can be uncomfortable, but the emotional impact is often overlooked. Recurring BV can affect confidence, intimacy, relationships, and trust in your own body.
I have spoken with women who have spent hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of dollars on treatments, supplements, washes, probiotics, and internet remedies while never receiving a clear explanation for why the problem keeps returning.
That is not a failure on their part.
It is often a failure to investigate the bigger picture.
Most women aren’t failing treatment.
Treatment is failing them.
The Question Nobody Seems to Ask
One of the most frustrating things I see in women’s healthcare is how quickly we focus on treating symptoms without investigating patterns.
Most appointments focus on what is happening today.
What does the discharge look like?
What does the odor smell like?
What medication should we prescribe?
Those questions matter.
But another question matters just as much.
Why does this keep happening?
Recurring BV is not simply about what is happening today. It is about understanding what may be contributing to recurrence in the first place.
If nobody investigates why symptoms continue to return, we may find ourselves treating the same problem repeatedly without ever uncovering the reason behind it.
Women deserve more than another round of guessing.
What Is BV?
Bacterial vaginosis, commonly called BV, occurs when the balance of bacteria within the vaginal microbiome changes.
The vagina naturally contains billions of bacteria. In a healthy environment, protective bacteria help maintain balance and support normal vaginal health.
When that balance shifts, other organisms may become more dominant, potentially contributing to symptoms such as odor, changes in discharge, irritation, or recurring discomfort.
Common symptoms may include:
- Vaginal odor
- Changes in discharge
- Vaginal irritation
- Symptoms that return after treatment
BV is extremely common.
What should not be common is being trapped in an endless cycle without understanding why.
Stop Blaming Yourself
Let’s clear up one of the biggest misconceptions about BV.
BV is not a sign that you’re dirty.
It is not a sign that you are not taking care of yourself.
And it is certainly not a personal failure.
Unfortunately, many women become so desperate for answers that they begin trying everything they can find online.
Special washes.
Supplements.
Home remedies.
Advice from social media.
Recommendations from friends who had a completely different experience.
The problem is that not every woman with recurring BV is dealing with the same underlying issue.
What helped someone else may have absolutely nothing to do with your situation.
That is why understanding your body is often far more valuable than copying someone else’s solution.
The Vaginal Microbiome Matters
One of the biggest gaps I see in recurrent BV care is a lack of attention to the vaginal microbiome.
Many women have never been offered vaginal microbiome testing.
Think about that for a moment.
Years of symptoms.
Multiple treatments.
Repeated frustration.
Yet nobody has taken a closer look at the ecosystem where the problem is occurring.
The vaginal microbiome contains billions of bacteria. Some help maintain balance. Others may become more dominant when conditions change.
Understanding what is present, and what may be missing, can provide valuable information when symptoms continue to return.
Vaginal microbiome testing may help identify:
- Which bacteria are present
- Whether protective bacteria are depleted
- Potential contributors to recurring symptoms
- Areas that deserve further evaluation

You don’t need someone to guess what’s wrong.
You need someone willing to investigate why it keeps happening.
What About Your Partner?
Now let’s discuss something many women have wondered about but few providers openly discuss.
Partners.
Research continues to explore the relationship between sexual activity, partner factors, and recurrent BV.
This does not mean your partner caused the problem.
It does mean recurrence is often more complex than most people realize.
Sometimes the missing piece of the puzzle is outside the place we have been looking.
Hormones May Be Part of the Story
Another commonly overlooked factor is hormones.
Many women notice changes in vaginal health during perimenopause, menopause, postpartum recovery, and other periods of hormonal fluctuation.
Hormones influence tissue health.
They influence moisture.
They influence the vaginal environment.
They influence the microbiome.
Sometimes recurring symptoms are connected to a bigger picture that deserves attention.
Women Deserve Better Than Guesswork
One of the most common things I hear is:
“Nobody ever explained this to me.”
And honestly, that should concern all of us.
Women deserve more than temporary fixes.
Women deserve more than endless prescriptions without investigation.
Women deserve more than being told, “Let’s see if this works.”
You deserve answers.
You deserve to ask questions.
You deserve healthcare providers who are willing to look deeper.
Ready for a Different Conversation?
If you’ve been dealing with recurring BV and temporary solutions that never seem to last, it may be time to investigate further.
Not because your body is broken.
Not because you have failed.
But because recurring symptoms deserve more than another guess.
